Home care workers

Home care workers provide support to Canadian families caring for children, family members with disabilities and elderly.

Over the years, Canada has had a caregiver program in one form or another.

Caregivers provide Canadian families with much needed support in caring for their children, family members with disabilities and elderly.

The current program refers to caregivers as Home care workers.

WHAT IS A HOME CARE WORKER?

Home care workers provide Canadian families with support in caring for their children, family members with disabilities and elderly.

You’ll need a Canadian employer who has been issued a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

Home care workers must work as home child care providers or home support workers.

WHO CAN APPLY AS A HOME CARE WORKER?

You can apply as a home care worker if:

  • you’re currently outside of Canada and will work in the province of Quebec
  • you’re already in Canada and have a valid study permit or a valid work permit
  • you’re allowed to work in Canada without a work permit
  • you’re eligible to apply for a work permit from inside Canada and you’re planning to work in the province of Quebec.

To apply, you’ll need to submit a work permit application with a copy of your Canadian employer’s positive LMIA.

If you’re already in Canada with a valid work permit, you might be able to apply to extend or change the conditions on your work permit.

WHO CAN’T APPLY AS A HOME CARE WORKER?

You CAN’T apply as a home care worker if:

  • you’re outside Canada and will be working in a province or territory other than Quebec
  • you’re applying for a work permit at a Port of Entry
  • you’re in Canada as a visitor (unless you’re planning to work in Quebec)
