Restoration of Status

Here's what you need to know about applying for restoration of status if you're a visitor, international student or temporary foreign worker.

If you’re a temporary resident in Canada who lost your status, you may be able to apply for restoration of status.

Temporary residents (including visitors, international students and temporary foreign workers) who lost their status can apply for restoration of status within 90 days of losing it.

You can apply if you lost your status for the following reasons:

Visitors

  • you stayed past the period you were authorized to stay in Canada

Temporary Foreign Workers

  • you changed Canadian employers
  • you changed your location of employment
  • you changed your type of work before being issued a new work permit

International Students

  • you changed the type of studies
  • you changed educational institutions
  • you changed your location of studies
  • you changed your times or periods of studies without applying to change the conditions on your study permit

You might still be eligible to apply for restoration of status if you continue to meet the original requirements for your stay and you didn’t violate any of the conditions imposed.

If you’d like to apply for restoration of status, you’ll have to:

  • submit your application within 90 days of losing your status
  • provide all the details that resulted in losing your status
  • continue meeting the requirements of your stay
  • continue meeting all the conditions outlined on your permit
  • pay the restoration fee

Submitting an application doesn’t guarantee that your status will be restored. An IRCC officer will process your application and determine if you are eligible for restoration.

You won’t be able to study or work until your application for restoration has been processed.

Restoration fee is $239.75. You won’t have to submit a separate application for an extension of temporary resident status when you apply for a study or work permit. You will be issued all the necessary documentation if your application for restoration of status is successful.
